Lifelong learning (FTLV): France and Europe are banking on micro-certifications

In one interview given to EPALE, Frédérique Vidal, former Minister of Higher Education and Research, highlights the initiatives undertaken in France to promote lifelong learning (FTLV) and micro-certifications.

Actions in favor of lifelong training

During her ministerial mandate, Ms. Vidal worked to strengthen FTLV in France. She worked on the development of the Validation of Acquired Experience (VAE) and encouraged a skills-based approach to facilitate the obtaining of diplomas over a more flexible period. Partnerships with companies were strengthened, and tailor-made training was set up to meet the specific needs of learners.

Introduction of micro-certifications

Frédérique Vidal discussed the importance of micro-certifications as a way to acquire and recognise new skills in a scalable way. These certifications allow individuals to adapt their skills to changes in the labour market, particularly in the face of the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. She stressed that these initiatives are part of a European approach to promoting lifelong learning and employability.

Social impact and inclusion

Ms. Vidal emphasizes the crucial role of FTLV and micro-certifications in developing a more egalitarian and inclusive society. By facilitating access to training for diverse audiences, these systems help reduce inequalities and offer everyone the opportunity to develop their skills throughout their professional life.

This interview highlights the efforts made in France to adapt the education system to contemporary needs, by promoting flexible training courses in line with changes in the job market.
